Jeong-ju Lee, a composer and musician specializing in the traditional Korean instrument Geomungo, was a founding member of the Jeolla-Namdo National Traditional Music Orchestra, where she worked for a decade. In 1994, she became a certified holder of the Geomungo as an Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 16. After studying at Korea’s National Arts School, she performed extensively in Seoul and toured France before relocating to Nantes.

In France, she has collaborated with diverse musical groups, produced numerous albums, and promoted the Geomungo across Europe. She founded the Festival du Printemps Coréen in Nantes in 2013 and received the Franco-Korean Cultural Prize in 2015 and the Korean Minister of Culture’s Award in 2023.

Jeong-ju Lee continually explores innovative uses for the Geomungo, including composing the album Corée for Radio France Internationale, collaborating with Switzerland’s Ringa contemporary dance company, and earning the 2019 Swiss Award for dance music. Supported by the French government for the past seven years, she continues to share the unique sounds and artistry of the Geomungo with audiences worldwide.
