Jordan Rudess - Steinway grand piano, Kurzweil 2600 & Korg Karma synths
You can't fault Jordan Rudess' intentions with his 2002 release, 4NYC. After the tragic events of 9/11, Rudess and his wife put together a benefit concert on September 24, 2001, at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center in Nyack, NY, in an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross. The album was issued a little over a year later, and is comprised solely of solo instrumental performances by Rudess, seven of 13 tracks from the live concert and the remainder recorded in the studio. The tunes run the gamut from piano (the album-opening "My Thoughts") to synthesizer (which provides the unmistakable harp sounds on "Mourning After"). Expectedly, the material is of the solemn variety, but there are plenty of tunes to show off Rudess' exceptional keyboard chops -- especially "A Step Beyond." To experience Jordan Rudess far outside of Dream Theater's oft-hectic and demanding prog metal, 4NYC is recommended.~Greg Prato
