It took Suvi Savikko roughly four years to grow Shedfromthebody from a pandemic pastime into one of doomgaze’s strongest new voices; with her latest, the Norwegian singer and composer is finally ready for prime-time. An austere, dreamy metal album steeped in dark romance and ceremonial shadowplay, Whisper and Wane leverages Savikko’s cherubic tones and nimble range alongside aggressive yet subtly streamlined instrumentation to arrive at an unsettling equilibrium that’s nothing short of gorgeous, especially when there’s layering involved (like, say, the Imogen Heap-esque interplay studding the lurching “Sungazer.”) Fans of Chelsea Wolfe, Greet Death, and Julie Christmas will want to give this one a spin ASAP.
