The album Diverso Lontano Incomprensibile by composer Vanessa Tagliabue Yorke is certainly not one of those occasions that come along easily; already at first listen it is something surprisingly different from what you are used to.
Particularly interesting figures in the current jazz scene such as Francesco Bearzatti on clarinet, Salvatore Maiore on cello and double bass, Paolo Birro on piano, Giovanni Maier on double bass, Enrico Terragnoli on electric guitar, banjo and podofono and Michele Rabbia on drums are joined by artists of a more classical nature: Laura Masotto on violin, Stefano Menato on second clarinet and Cmelody sax, Eva Impellizzeri on viola and Leonardo Sapere on cello.
The impression you get is of a completely different concept of music, something that could be defined as musical theatre based on a sequence (certainly planned and well arranged) of very interesting sound factors. Different languages, rhythms that pay homage to myths such as Ellington, abstract tempos and types of instruments (some borrowed from the electronic/digital world) find themselves linked in a common framework despite their apparent difference.
The entire production makes a very varied communication that immediately integrates theatrical/literary experiments through the use of some texts by the poet Charles Baudelarie and those of the Belgian performance artist and poet Marcel Broodthaers, reported in the song “ Zebra ”. It seems to find yourself inside a work where all the sounds, main actors on the stage, interact in an engaging dialogue between genres that derive from different cultures.
A performance that perfectly describes the composer's path: experimental influences, artistic fields that intersect and journeys to distant places.
You can feel electronic spectralisms that entertain conversations with free jazz parts or oriental music with perfect interlocking with more medieval references.
In the artistic and creative world (for example in the cinematographic one) we can identify two extremely broad areas: the one we rely on for entertainment and the one we approach in a more committed way to discover the limits and ideas of our world.
Different, Far, Incomprehensibleit is a rare example of the second case that, in addition to listening, requires participation; the experimental push (very evident) will surely generate stimuli that will require some feedback to be fully understood, in all their precious nuances.
