Pavel Vranický is a great composer? Yes, Pavel Vranický, the Bohemian composer born in 1756 at the height of Viennese Classicism who died in 1808 at the height of Napoleonic Romanticism, is a great composer. This 1990 recording of his C minor and D major symphonies proves it. The power of the themes, the lyricism of the melodies, the strength of the logic, the depth of the invention, and the elegance of the execution are as masterful as the best works in the genre at the time. Although conductor Bohumil Gregor is better known for his work in later repertoire, he presents a persuasive portrait of Vranický as a great composer. The Dvorák Chamber Orchestra performs with easy virtuosity and complete commitment. Supraphon's early digital sound is vivid but harsh at the climaxes.
