Steeped in 80s yacht-rock bric-a-bac, the single marries phaser-saloon chord lines with wispy flute melodies.
Radiating with a burning desire to make people move, Intermood’s heaving live performances have turned heads within Naarm’s thriving instrumental scene. Swearing an allegiance to always bring the ruckus, the group’s blend of instrumental psychedelic jazz and high energy neo-disco has emerged from sweaty sold out shows within Australia’s music capital. Today the band announces the title single from their debut EP ‘Casuarina’ released on Wednesday 12th February. Steeped in 80s yacht-rock bric-a-bac, the single marries phaser-saloon chord lines with wispy flute melodies and will be released on Swiss label Stone Pixels, headed up by members of cosmic instrumental outfit L’Eclair.
Swirling wind sounds gently set the scene for Casuarina, inspired from the band's real life Casuarina tree which thrives above their recording studio. Easy strummed acoustic guitar and whimsical flute melodies with 70’s inspired electric keys are welcomed into the fold. The relaxed nature is offset with a vibrant four to the floor drum pattern, an effect that seems to be the band’s fortè - relaxed yet danceable. How do they do it? “Casuarina has sonic elements of retro-futurism, and sits comfortably in an EP which distracts you from the outside world and instead allows you to look introspectively” says keys player Oli Murray. Much like previous single ‘Hypnagogic’, Casuarina allows for the builds and breakdowns that are present on most dance floors, and sits within the EP’s instrumental dream odysseys, club ravers and feel-good bops. In the face of chaos, the Casuarina EP is a warm psychedelic experience that is brimming with energy and stacked with soul.
In Intermood’s short time spent within the Naarm music community, they were invited to perform at the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and were the recipients of the 2024 Strawberry Fields Live Music Act Competition.
