For a couple of years in the early to mid 1950s the great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson joined forces with long-established vibes player and bandleader Lionel Hampton as a member of his quartet and quintet, and they recorded a series of sessions for Norman Granz’s Clef and Verve labels, which resulted in a string of album releases during the early years of the vinyl long-playing album era. This 48-track 5-CD collection comprises just about all the titles they recorded at those sessions, including both versions of most of the tunes of which they recorded performances of different lengths – there are a number of significantly extended pieces. The core group at the sessions comprised Hampton and Peterson, plus Ray Brown on bass and Buddy Rich on drums, with clarinettist Buddy De Franco and guitarist Herb Ellis added at different sessions to make up a quintet, so it’s a stellar line-up. The titles were released on a variety of 10” and 12” LPs, which were “The Lionel Hampton Quartet Vols. 1 & 2”, “The Lionel Hampton Quintet Vols. 1 & 2”, “Lionel Hampton Plays Love Songs”, “Flying Home”, “Hamp’s Big Four”, “Hallelujah Hamp” and The High And The Mighty”. It’s a feast of top-class small group modern jazz, and is great entertainment from some of the big names in the genre.
