Humans likely have been telling each other stories to keep the darkness at bay since before the invention of agriculture or organized religion. This communion of expression and witness is one of our oldest rituals as a species—it’s what makes us us. Concerts are a modern analog of this ancient rite, a chance to be both entertainment and to feel our shared humanity more deeply. It’s a magical thing when it happens, but the moment is often fleeting and hard to sustain, let alone document. But on one exquisite summer evening, in a gorgeous concert hall by the sea, our ritual came together. I was in good voice, accompanied by a dynamic and virtuosic string quintet, the house was packed…and the tape was rolling. So here’s to the power of song, and long live the ceremony that moves us each uniquely and collectively reassures us that we’re never as alone as we may sometimes feel. -Mark Erelli
