In spite of its title, California actually draws heavily on Spanish and Latin American sounds, including Latin jazz, bossa nova, flamenco, and Mexican music. Jeff Linsky's guitar playing is as smooth and fluid as ever, and although the production is perhaps a bit too smooth itself, the romantic atmosphere is never overdone or cloying. It's a testament to Linsky's restraint and taste, and since California is one of his more eclectic albums as well, it's quite a satisfying listen for fans of his elegant sound.
