Denver-based tenor saxophonist Fred Hess has had a longstanding musical partnership with outstanding trumpeter Ron Miles. With fellow Coloradans and like-minded musical upstarts John Gunther on alto sax and guitarist Dale Bruning (one-time teacher of Bill Frisell and the Rocky Mountain counterpart to Jim Hall), they explore a provocative path with the New York rhythm tandem of drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Ken Filiano. Highlights include Bruning’s eccentric jazz waltz “Dancing With Daffodils,” Hess’ angular, bi-tonal “Blues for Bonnie Belle” and his expansive, suitelike tribute to Michael Brecker, “Single Moment.” The underrated Bruning is also highlighted in a masterful solo guitar rendition of Rodgers & Hart’s “Spring Is Here.”
