Xmal Deutschland’s debut album, Fetisch, established a stylistic range that few goth bands could master and it’s expanded even further on the masterful follow-up, Tocsin. The slow-burning "Tag für Tag" is one of the best examples of how the band lost none of their martial intensity but—thanks to a vocal arrangement that owes a bit of a debt to both Liz Fraser and Siouxsie Sioux—is also capable of conjuring ominously hazy atmospheres. Likewise, a cut like "Eiland" manages to be both cavernously claustrophobic and sonically expansive. © Jason Ferguson
