The music on pianist Renee Rosnes' self-titled debut as a leader features her in several settings. "Diana," a moody ballad, is a relatively uneventful soprano-synthesizer duet with Wayne Shorter that was performed during a concert in Copenhagen. Three quartet tracks feature the tenor of Ralph Bowen, who demonstrates how Shorter used to sound (circa 1964-65); the McCoy Tyner-inspired piano of the leader fits in perfectly. Two other selections find Branford Marsalis on either soprano or tenor, faring best on the latter instrument during Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi." A boppish trio version of Cole Porter's "Everything I Love" is the strongest performance by Renee while "Fleur-de-lis" is a wandering but generally intriguing acoustic duet with Herbie Hancock. Overall, this CD was a good starting point for Renee Rosnes who was 28 at the time.~Scott Yanow
