Piqsiq - Legends (2025)

PIQSIQ's new album, Legends, features eight tracks inspired by prominent figures from Inuit culture, framed by introductory and concluding textural pieces. Recorded at Monarch Studios in Vancouver with producer Alex Penney, the album highlights PIQSIQ's vocals and percussion, with additional contributions from Penney.

The sisters, Tiffany and Inuksuk, aimed to honor traditional Inuit stories, viewing them as crucial to Inuit identity and as a means of passing down vital teachings about safety, relationships, and connection to the spirit world. During recording, they used visual slideshows of historical and contemporary Inuit artworks depicting these legends, projecting them in the studio to guide their vocal improvisations.

For Legends, PIQSIQ adapted their improvisational style by recording live vocals and crafting them using a Boss RC-505 Loop Station, combining the energy of live performance with production precision.

The album is accompanied by a motion-capture video for the track "Mahaha: The Tickling Demon." The video, featuring Inuksuk's sons, depicts them defeating Mahaha (a demon who tickles people to death) using traditional Inuit games, emphasizing the role of ancestral knowledge in modern contexts.

Legends represents a significant evolution for PIQSIQ, incorporating traditional Inuit drums (qilaut) and other percussion while developing their storytelling to bring ancient characters and teachings into a contemporary, immersive, and emotionally resonant experience. The album is seen by the sisters as a true synthesis of their artistic identity, reconnecting with childhood stories and reimagining them through their current lives.
