In the Beginning is a celebratory and high-energy release by Something Blue, a rotating ensemble of top-tier jazz musicians under Posi-Tone Records, marking the label’s 30th anniversary. The album revisits and revitalizes compositions from the label’s 1990s catalog, originally penned by Edwing, John Nau, Phil Farris, Joe Gaeta, and others. These pieces are reinterpreted by a stellar lineup including Diego Rivera, Willie Morris, Altin Sencalar, Langston Hughes II, Art Hirahara, Boris Kozlov, and Rudy Royston.

Founded as a DIY label in a garage by Marc Free and later joined by engineer Nick O’Toole, Posi-Tone is now one of the premier labels for straight-ahead jazz, known for blending classic swing with a contemporary edge. This album exemplifies that approach with tight ensemble work, vibrant solos, and powerful rhythm.

Tracks range from blistering swingers (“Trapdoor,” “Sun Sound”), to lyrical ballads (“Undercurrents,” “This One’s for You”), to rhythmically diverse pieces with Latin and blues influences (“Dream for Donte,” “Portrait of Harlem”). The closing track, “Sea of Sand,” is a sprawling, modern showcase that highlights the band’s expressive range.
