Between 1967 and 1983, Guinea’s government-backed label Syliphone released over 750 songs as part of its revolutionary cultural policy, authenticité. This first-ever state-sponsored recording label in post-colonial Africa reimagined traditional music through modern orchestration, featuring griot songs and indigenous instruments like the kora and balafon.

This Volume 1 compilation showcases early Syliphone recordings — a powerful blend of traditional Guinean sounds with Cuban rhythms, jazz, and highlife. Created during Guinea’s post-independence cultural renaissance under President Sékou Touré, this music reflects a unique moment when artistic expression was national policy and cultural pride became revolutionary.
