With its echoey production and a cast that includes everyone from broken-down prostitutes ("Clermont Hotel") to drugged-up mental patients ("Dirt Nap"), WHINE DE LUNE continues Trailer Bride's safari into the underbrush of the South's gothic backwaters. Led by multi-instrumentalist Melissa Swingle and her fatigued drone, the band veers between sounding like PJ Harvey fronting the Del McCoury Band ("Felt Like a Sin") to a hopped-up Lucinda Williams backed by the Velvet Underground ("Pasture"). The rusty-as-nails quality to this record recalls the kind of summer day where the humidity hangs in the air and everyday activities slog along at half-speed.
