Alfie Firmin is a singer-songwriter from Southend-on-Sea, Essex. In 2023, he released his third album, Absentee, on the Spanish indie label Bobo Integral. The album garnered a positive reception from outlets such as AllMusic, BBC Introducing, Colours Through The Air, and Add To Wantlist. This led to performances across the UK and Alfie’s first international gigs in Sweden.
In 2024, Alfie followed up with This Time Around, released through his own imprint, Onionheads. The album received praise from Dead Good Music and was named Record of the Week by South Records, leading to festival performances that summer.
Alfie returns with a new self-titled album, set for release on July 11th via Onionheads (LP/Digital). This marks his fifth full-length album as a solo artist and his third in as many years. The lead single, "Anna," is a heartfelt tribute to his wife and partner of ten years, reflecting on their enduring long-distance relationship.
Alfie explains, "I wanted to be less abstract on this album and sing more directly about my life and the people in it. My relationship with Anna has inspired many of my songs in the past, but I’ve never written one as direct as this. It felt natural, like something I’ve been working towards for a long time."
Now happily married and living together, Alfie also draws inspiration from his newfound domestic life on the standout track, "Reminder," a statement of intent and commitment to his partner. The song features lilting acoustic guitar, lush harmony vocals, and a delicate upright piano performance by fellow Southend-on-Sea musician Ted Groves, who also produced the album and co-arranged the songs with Alfie.
Alfie and Ted performed all the instruments and harmony vocals heard on the album, their close collaboration evident in the ease and familiarity with which they perform together. Alongside The Beatles & The Beach Boys, influences range from Nilsson to Brinsley Schwarz to Dion DiMucci. Alfie continues to draw from the rich legacy of 20th-century pop music, whilst infusing it with his personal experiences.
