The Clambake soundtrack may not have been much of an improvement on its immediate predecessors – but the bonus songs most assuredly were. Ironically the best of the movie songs, “The Girl I Never Loved” and “How Can You Lose What You Never Had,” were both cut from the actual movie. But it was “Guitar Man,” “Just Call Me Lonesome,” and the previously released “Big Boss Man” and “You Don’t Know Me” – all from the September Nashville sessions – that were the unquestionable highlight of an album that signaled what appeared, after the fact, to be a new direction.
