With Lemon Borealis—their eighth album and first for A Strangely Isolated Place—Michigan trio KILN (Kevin Hayes, Kirk Marrison, Clark Rehberg III) compress their signature widescreen ambient mosaics into twelve vivid miniatures. Live-looped guitars, field-recorded percussion and sculpted waveforms dissolve into hi-meets-lo-fi textures, shaping aquarium-bright grooves (“DrnkGrlfrnd”), verdant polyrhythms (“Maplefunk Diptych”) and sizzling noise-blurs (“Deacon Rayhand”). Lacquer-cut by Andreas “LUPO” Lubich and pressed to transparent yellow/ochre vinyl, the record extends KILN’s 30-year exploration of eroded consonance, subtle melancholy and panchromatic pulse while feeling more immediate—and rhythmically vital—than ever.
