La Chiva Gantiva - EGO (2025)

EGO is the fourth studio album by the Colombian-Belgian band La Chiva Gantiva, released to celebrate their 15th anniversary. The 11-track album explores the concept of the human ego, blending Afro-Colombian rhythms with trip-hop, electronic, rock, and funk. Led by vocalist and songwriter Rafael Espinel, the band creates hypnotic and cinematic atmospheres, addressing themes of obsession, transformation, and cultural diversity. Key tracks include “Tiene Hambre,” exploring the duality of ego, “Yo Vuelo al Revés,” revisiting the band’s early sound with 14 musicians and a female choir, and “Vibration is Life,” featuring Panamanian artist Cienfue’s surf-rock guitar style. Colombian guest Guadalupe Giraldo Hincapié brings traditional Afro-Colombian vocals and percussion to “Vente Tú” and “Fuego,” while Natalia Doco features on “Bombón.” The track “Guaguancó” pays homage to classic cumbia in the style of Lucho Bermúdez, and “Somos Indios” incorporates indigenous chants. Recorded in the band’s Brussels studio, EGO reflects their multicultural lineup (Colombia, France, Vietnam, Chile, Peru, Belgium) and is accompanied by vibrant music videos and documentaries, reinforcing their status as an artistic collective.
