Once again AVID are proud to be adding another brilliant female jazz singer to our ever- increasing catalogue of classic jazz women. Perhaps unfairly not considered in the absolute top tier of greats such as Ella, Billie, Sarah or Dinah, Etta Jones, who was born in South Carolina in 1928 began her singing career as a teenager in the 1940s when she joined the band of Budd Johnson. There she played alongside clarinettist Barney Bigard and saxophonist Georgie Auld and was produced by none other than Leonard Feather. She would later hook up with the Earl Hines sextet between 1949-52 while she was searching for a recording contract. In 1960 she joined the legendary jazz label Prestige where she went on to make ten albums during a creative three year golden recording period. Here we feature four of her earliest and best albums, kicking off with her million selling classic "Don't Go To Strangers" featuring such jazz luminaries as Frank Wess, Richard Wylands, George Duvivier and Roy Haynes. Across our other three selections Etta is joined by the likes of Oliver Nelson, Lem Winchester, Mal Waldron, Jerome Richardson, Budd Johnson, Art Davis and Ed Shaughnessy.
