Underground is a tribute album by drummer, composer, and producer Geoff Mann, honoring his father Herbie Mann’s seminal 1969 album Memphis Underground. The project reimagines the original compositions, preserving their jazz-soul core while incorporating modern arrangements with rock influences and expanded instrumental sections. Featuring Latin GRAMMY-winning flautist Domenica Fossati, Marcos Garcia (Antibalas, Chico Mann), Daptone mainstay Victor Axelrod, and bassist J.P. Maramba, the album captures the spirit of the original, blending jazz, soul, and rhythm & blues. It pays homage to Herbie Mann’s pioneering genre-fusion approach, with key tracks like “Memphis Underground” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” highlighting the emotional and musical connection across generations.
