The British girl group scene wasn't nearly as vital as the American one, but there were still quite a few fun recordings produced in the style during the mid-'60s. This compilation is a good overview of lesser-known highlights of a sub-genre that is nearly unknown in the U.S. The emphasis is not on groups, but solo singers in the girl group style; Petula Clark was the only one of these 24 performers to reach stardom Stateside, and only a couple of others (Sandie Shaw, the Honeycombs) became even moderately well-known. In fact, most of these singles flopped in the U.K. as well. There's still a good amount of sass and sub-New York soul/pop/rock production to be found in the tracks by the Breakaways, Antoinette, Val McKenna, and others. Notable highlights include Sarah Jane's "Listen People" (a ringer for Marianne Faithfull's mid-'60s sound) and Julie Grant's splendidly sultry, operatic "Come to Me."~Richie Unterberger
