Jobber took their name from pro-wrestling and relies on the spectacle sport as a metaphor. A “jobber to the stars” (the title of Jobber’s debut) is a wrestler who always loses to big names, but not to total unknowns. It’s a paradoxical role of being good enough to get to the top, but never getting there—but perhaps it can also relieve you of the pressures of winning at life. Well, to stay true to the theme, let’s say Jobber to the Stars tackles quarter-life crisis anxiety with the intensity of a steel cage match. The album bounces between pop-punk energy and dreamy interludes, making for a suspenseful and punchy kind of alt pop with frontwoman Kate Meizner’s vocals drifting from contemplative to urgent. To top it it off, there’s some smart songwriting on this record that prevents the wrestling metaphors from becoming gimmicky. Jobber to the Stars is out now through Exploding in Sound.
