The Canadian mainstay’s second album is an especially assured statement. Though they’ve been at it for over a decade, this LP marks only the second full-length album from James Barker Band, a mainstay in the Canadian country music scene. That veteran experience makes its way into the music, though, as One of Us is an especially assured statement from the multi-CCMA-winning band. One of Us opens with “Somebody I Know”, a slick party anthem with shades of Kip Moore and Old Dominion. “Blue Lights” swaps the drum kit for a programmed beat, showing off the band’s poppier inclinations, while the loose and infectious “Caught Me at a Good Time” favours traditional instruments, steel guitar and all. Other highlights are the fan favourite “You Didn’t Hear It from Me”, which landed the band a No. 1 country single in Canada, and “Every One of You”, a sweet and simple love song that closes out the LP.
