Drawing on years of experience and a unique approach to sound, cellist, composer, and improviser Okkyung Lee presents Yeo‑Neun — her first album on Shelter Press and one of the most unexpected works of her career. Recorded with the Yeo‑Neun Quartet (Maeve Gilchrist on harp, Jacob Sacks on piano, Eivind Opsvik on bass), it marks the culmination of a long creative journey and a bold departure from her familiar experimental language.
The title Yeo‑Neun (“gesture of opening” in Korean) reflects the album’s essence — ten compositions born from personal memories and a life between Seoul, Boston, and New York. Blending chamber music, free improvisation, Korean tradition, and popular ballads, it creates an atmosphere beyond the boundaries of genre, culture, and time.
Honest, emotional, and innovative, the album reaffirms Lee as one of the key figures in today’s experimental music scene.
