Rainy Miller guests on the sublime debut EP of melancholic slowcore by Belgian duo EYDN for his Fixed Abode label - RIYL Hysterical Love Project, Joanne Robertson, Rest Symbol, Flying Saucer Attack.

In the wake of Fixed Abode’s acclaimed turns by Iceboy Violet, Space Afrika, and Shell Company, and a growing repute for Rainy’s own work thanks to a strong new album ‘Joseph, What Have You Done?’, EYDN bring fine new shades of songwriting intimacy surely simpatico with their label boss’ sense of tristesse. That mutual feeling is most palpable on the busted downbeat breaks and muted, smudged strings of lead cut ‘Gold’, where singer Bobbie chases a cameo on Rainy x Space Afrika’s ‘A Grisaille Wedding’ with hushed, mantric vox in duet with Rainy’s forlorn chorus counterpoint.

Across the EP they subtly alter that formula to classic ends as ‘Hellbreakers’ stealthily expands from the kernel of velvet voice and Tumy’s guitar to panoramic trip hop x post rock, and ‘Magnolia’ proves a smarts for knackered downbeat drums along with ‘The Beach’ comparable to Flying Saucer Attack. ‘Sky Nest’ signs off with a gorgeous etheric flourish, stripping everything back to layered vocal and strings blissfully suspended to catch bodies in swoon and ripe to file next to your favourite bits from the re-emergent intersection of slowcore shoegaze x trip hop that’s fulfilling a certain, timeless need for listeners right now.
