Julianna Barwick - Circumstance Synthesis (2019) [Hi-Res]

“Circumstance Synthesis” is an EP by Julianna Barwick, released in 2019 on Commend There (RVNG Intl.). Commissioned for New York’s Sister City hotel, the project used a rooftop sky-facing camera connected to Microsoft AI. Movements in the sky—clouds, birds, light—triggered sounds from Barwick’s custom sample bank, generating music in real time. The five resulting tracks (Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening, Night) form a cycle that mirrors the rhythm of a day. Ethereal vocal loops, airy synths, and ambient textures create a meditative soundscape that blurs the line between natural environment, technology, and human creativity.
