The first album in the "Postcards from Ukraine" series offered a brief overview of the history of Ukrainian music through a few miniatures for piano and violin. In this second part, four representative chamber works demonstrate how quickly music in Ukraine developed its own identity—even though all four composers struggled with oppression by the authoritarian regime in the north. One of them, Vasyl Barvinsky, even spent ten years in the Gulag, and his manuscripts were destroyed by the Soviet authorities. After his release—unbroken—he set about reconstructing the lost scores, but died before completing this task. His glorious "Piano Trio in A Minor" gives a glimpse of what was almost lost—and how much there is still to discover.
