Paris: a city which has captured the imaginations of poets, artists and musicians across the centuries. A city which brims with nostalgia, and has inspired songs of romance and passion; a city whose fictional depictions have had us waltzing with abandon through the Champs-Elysées, sipping our coffees in Montmartre, and seeing the Seine through rose-coloured spectacles.
Letters from Paris is classical guitarist Alexandra Whittingham’s first full-length album with Decca, in which she visits some of France’s most iconic musical characters. From melancholy miniatures to the soaring melodies of French chansons, this is an album which gives us the space to contemplate, marvel and hope.
From an early age, Alexandra has been dedicated to presenting both familiar and lesser-known works to her audiences, beginning with her YouTube channel which has now accumulated an impressive 60 million views. This album is a continuation of Alexandra’s vision for classical music, and sees her setting music by some of France’s best-loved composers alongside pieces which her audiences may be discovering for the first time. As part of her mission to expand the guitar’s repertoire, the album contains seven specially commissioned new arrangements, as well as guest appearances from other musical stars of Alexandra’s generation.
