Julie Sassoon, whose playing has often been compared to Keith Jarrett’s legendary Cologne concert, moves between composition and improvisation: sparkling, ethereal music, created from complex and finely crafted sound clusters of consistently imaginative expression. Her playing is simultaneously focused and open, conveying both meditative silence and restlessness. A fragile tenderness is juxtaposed with powerful expressiveness. In her quartet, which transcends the stylistic boundaries of jazz and minimalism, Julie Sassoon has found three musicians who absorb, develop, and contrast these qualities sensitively.
