Sam Vloemans - Otrabanda (2011)

The album's title "Otrabanda" means "the other side" in Papiamento, the mixed language of the native island of Curaçao. This refers to his constant search for new relationships. For example, in his previous work "Bord du Nord" he connected jazz with Kurt Weill's chanson and cabaret.
This time, the focus is on the exotic rhythms of Curaçao. Vlumans listened attentively to American jazz musicians such as Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione. Eric Truffaz, Miles Davis, and even Santana are also valuable sources of inspiration. Among the guests are Tutu Puoane and Peter Delannoye. Partly due to its connection with world music, this melodic jazz is accessible to the general public.
