Van Dormael (posthumous award winner for scoring his brother Jaco’s cult classic film Mr. Nobody), North Country Suite grooves along even at its knottiest, constantly shifting focus from individual solos to Octurn’s crisp interplay. Van Dormael’s nimble chops nicely accent his complex writing, and there’s subtle lyricism amidst the intricacies too (“Organized Life”). Highly recommended for modern jazz listeners in any season and at any latitude. Favorite track: Organized Life.
