It's crazy to think that Björn Yttling hasn't released a solo album in exactly two decades. The member of Peter, Björn & John (whose recordings have been unavailable for several years now) continues to showcase his musical inventiveness with his new project, Yttling Jazz. And here comes his album under this pseudonym, titled Illegal Hit.

As his name suggests, the Swedish producer (who has collaborated with Lykke Li, among others) will tackle the jazz style, following in the footsteps of Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk, with a touch worthy of Jean-Michel Jarre thrown in. The result is nine hybrid and creative compositions, including the opening track "Sodon The Mountain Man," where jazz collides with other indie and electronic influences in the most beautiful way, as well as the more casual "Deadbeat Blues" and the highly hypnotic "Malgomaj" that follow.

Yttling Jazz doesn't hesitate to add a dose of mysticism, adding an almost Lynchian touch to his jazz, which is both contemplative and lively. This is all the more noticeable when listening to "Pilot 23" and "City In Darkness," with its dark brass, where the member of Peter, Björn and John manages to transport us to various strange worlds. We wander through these different worlds like a curious beast on "School Bus On A Weeknd" or on "Tanto In The Night" as a swirling conclusion which will synthesize this Illegal Hit full of mysteries and fascinations of all kinds.
