An inspiring collection of John Hosking's liturgical choral music.
This CD of new voice choral works represents an exciting and dynamic approach to writing for the church. It's melodic and catchy music, and the pieces range from exquisite miniatures like A Royal Blessing, written for the birth of Prince George of Cambridge in 2013, to a massive Te Deum production. A short production of Hosking's Requiem is also included.
John Hosking is currently the Assistant Director of Music at St Asaph's Cathedral in North Wales. As a prize-winning student at the Royal College of Music, John continued his studies with the late Nicholas Danby and Margaret Philips. In 1996, he was appointed a researcher on the organ of Westminster Abbey and is the only person who has ever held this position for three years. His recent move into the world of composition has been met with great enthusiasm by both performers and listeners. For him, a composition is the result of a source of inspiration — whether it's a text, a life event, a choir, or an individual performer. John Hosking is especially known for his powerful and domineering improvisations, and he drew most of his inspiration from three great organists.: Martin Baker, David Briggs, and French master Pierre Cauchereau. The style used in his improvisations permeates the organ accompaniment in many of the compositions on this cd, influencing the vocal lines.
This is the eighth CD recorded by Regent with the Selwyn College Choir in Cambridge, and the third in which they joined forces with the Ely Cathedral Women's Choir under the direction of Sarah McDonald.
All works are recorded for the first time.
