Don Cherry - The Summer House Sessions (2021) [Hi-Res]

In 1968, the prominent avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, a pioneer of free jazz, settled in Sweden where he led a series of weekly workshops on extended forms of improvisation from February to April. That summer, he, members of his Swedish and international working bands (including musicians from the US, France, Sweden, and Turkey), and a Turkish drummer, gathered at recording engineer Göran Freese's summer house in Kummelnäs, just outside of Stockholm, for a series of rehearsals and jam sessions. These recordings, known as the "Summer House Sessions," were long considered lost and were recently found in the Swedish Jazz Archive, becoming available over fifty years after they were recorded. The eight-piece ensemble, lacking a common language, used music as their means of communication. These freewheeling sessions were an early example of Don Cherry's developing "collage music" concept and his shift towards more pan-ethnic expression, preceding his Eternal Rhythm dates. Cherry eliminated solos and tune introductions, creating poetic suites that layered manifold cultural idioms. The CD edition of the album includes bonus material featuring other recordings from the same day with additional Swedish musicians.
