The album Ségui sô ("Return to the Roots") by the Montreal-based musician Dogbo, originally from the Ivory Coast, is hailed as an exceptional release, presenting a deep and organic fusion of jazz, progressive music, and West African elements. In contrast to his previous album, Coubli (2021), which was a more typical blend of Afro-pop and jazz, Ségui sô features a deeper and more intrinsic coalescence of roots, resulting in a unique sound. The musical foundation of the album is ontologically jazz, but it is enriched with streaks of old prog synth and invigorating percussions, expressing the richness of West African culture, including polyrhythm and polyphony. Dogbo acts as the mastermind and leader, whose expressiveness is rooted in his mastery of jazz, traditional West African expressions, and mbalax. The recording features exceptional musicians, including Housefly on piano, Rémi Cormier on trumpet, and Djely Tapa on vocals. The album presents a large, atmospheric, yet rhythmically energetic sonic canvas and is considered one of the most successful and intelligent fusion proposals of the year.
