The Brazilian band Oruã from downtown Rio de Janeiro, described as "poor man’s jazz" and "working-class’ krautrock," exports Brazilian art. The group consists of guitarist and producer Lê Almeida, João Casaes (synths), Bigu Medine (bass), and Ana Zumpano (drums). Their music is a blend of lo-fi indie rock, psychedelica, noise, afrobeat, and Brazilian references, including Luiz Gonzaga’s primal Pernambuco sound and classic Brazilian psych rock. In 2019, they were discovered by Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, which led to Lê and João becoming temporary members of Built to Spill and contributing to the recording, co-producing, and co-mixing of their 2022 album When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Following extensive touring with Built to Spill, Oruã returned to Seattle to record the album Slacker [KLP307] with Jim Roth, where they continue to mix "the electric pulses of deconstructed guitars over a mesmerizing groove," inducing a collective trance.
