Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, born Jalacy Jay Hawkins in Cleveland in 1929, was a former boxer who became a talented singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. He gained infamy in the 1960s for his macabre stage performances, pioneering the shock rock genre. His signature song, "I Put A Spell On You," was recorded in 1956 for Okeh Records, featuring wild screaming and grunts; Hawkins claimed he did not recall making the allegedly drunken recording. In 1967, he released an updated version of the song with a funky beat on Decca Records. This version, coupled with a rework of Shades Of Blue's "You’re An Exception To The Rule," served as the title track for a highly sought-after 1977 album released by the Versatile label. The album fuses reimagined standards with new Hawkins compositions, including the 1973 single "Africa Gone Funky," which featured Skull Snaps as the backing band, an appropriate choice given Hawkins' iconic smoking skull-on-a-stick named Henry.
