Puritan Themes is the 17th album by Emil Amos under his Holy Sons project, released on Thrill Jockey Records. The album blends a laid-back West Coast 70's vibe with wry humor and dark undertones, creating dreamy, lush compositions. Inspired by 70's radio and early Bee Gees, Amos infuses existential themes, political references, and nods to American legends. The centerpiece track "Chain Gang" is an imagined tale drawing from Cat Stevens, Cool Hand Luke, and John Henry, with lyrics referencing Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle." The album is entirely recorded and mixed by Amos, who is renowned for his home production and experimental sound techniques. Arrangements feature mellotron, lap steel, drum machines, and the Akai MPC sampler, with horns on "Chain Gang" performed by Kelly Pratt. Amos employs unique mixing methods, including repeated bouncing and sound manipulation. Puritan Themes seeks to escape modernity by returning to simpler, more immersive musical experiences.
