The 'Total Spook' mixtape by Artetetra pays homage to the forgotten commercial cassette and CD culture of the 1980s and 1990s that featured mass-distributed Halloween sound effects, horror tales, and spooky music. These US-produced releases, often involving both famous names (such as Prince's Dr. Fink, Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark) and anonymous creatives, were characterized by bold experimentation in sound design. Producers and musicians utilized carte blanche to employ extreme samples, vocal manipulation, time-based effects, and eerie sound fonts, developing a unique sonic atmosphere based on the campy cliches of horror and Halloween imagery. Following an extensive 30-hour deep dive into archival material, Luigi Monteanni compiled the 100-minute mixtape, which resurrects the most endearing, weird, and experimental soundscapes of this forgotten consumer culture.
