Heleen Andriessen draws composition inspiration from both Rachmaninov and Radiohead, with her band volpe developing her initial ideas into intricate arrangements. The title of their second album, elders ("elsewhere"), represents a sanctuary in Andriessen's mind where she seeks beauty. Musically, this translates into evolving or suddenly bursting repetitive patterns, balancing her playful runs and Stijn Demuynck's grooves with melancholic undertones and subtle dissonance. Following her studies in philosophy, Andriessen found her true voice in jazz, drawn by its harmonies and the interplay between musicians, which she now expresses in volpe. Drummer Stijn Demuynck contributes natural, fluid grooves and varied textures, while bassist Kobe Boon, known for his work in Steiger and other projects, seamlessly transitions between a supportive role and an experimental style using the bow. Together, the musicians of volpe create both intimate and exuberant atmospheres, making their shared creative joy evident.
