After one of his tours was canceled, Markus stayed with the narrator for a week, during which they improvised and recorded their musical experiments daily. The musicians explored a hovering nocturnal mood, which reflected a dissonance in their lives and the world, including themes of comfort, distress, distance from family, and a loss of hope for humanity. The authors view themselves as artists taking a "shamanic path" toward the outlying regions of cognition. This musical immersion, which reminded the narrator of Peter Kingsley's books on the pre-Socratic mystics, is described as "subterranean," seeking balance inside a dark silence. The deep friendship between the narrator and Markus is based on a shared foundation of searching, questioning, practice, and an "alchemical process" of creating new things from within their life journeys.
