From Melbourne’s bayside suburbia comes The Gnomes, a four-piece band turning 60s beat revivalism into something fresh, fast, and gloriously fun. Their mod-tinged self-titled debut LP captures everything that’s been buzzing through the underground: chiming guitars, cheeky harmonies, and infectious energy, straight from the lineage of The Easybeats, The Kinks, and early Beatles—just as you expect after a look at the cover art—but turbocharged for today’s stages.
What began as teenage frontman Jay Millar’s solo bedroom project as Gnome—we previously raved about his I Like It EP (a new version of its title track is included here)—has evolved into a full-blown garage rock powerhouse. The four young guys go full speed for swaggering rhythm & blues grit and jangly Merseybeat sparkle, with touches of fuzzed-out psych, anchored by confident songwriting. They aren’t just mining nostalgia, they’re reshaping it with style and spirit, retro but razor-sharp.
Of the twelve songs, Flippin’ Stomp, I Like It, I’ll Be There, and Play With You are the most guaranteed to fill the floor, but the less wild tunes are also worth checking out.
