The hip-hop duo Armand Hammer, consisting of Elucid and Billy Woods, has released their seventh studio album, Mercy, produced by The Alchemist. Their repeated collaboration is logical, given the success of their previous, more accessible album Haram (2021), which The Alchemist also produced. Mercy continues their signature aesthetic, using a complex musical backdrop that incorporates elements of avant-ambient, jazz, noise-rap, pensive harpsichord, and even video-game synths, which is noted to bring out the producer's strangest and best work. The duo's lyrics remain socially acute, mixing free-associative, dystopian barbs with front-lines reporting on working check-to-check. Their themes of money and the working class reflect Woods' Marxist paternal background more than their own rap status, demonstrating that they remain true to their roots even at the peak of their career.
