The album is the original motion picture soundtrack to the landmark American adventure horror film "King Kong" (1933), directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack for RKO Radio Pictures. The music was composed by Max Steiner, who is widely credited with creating the first real full-blown, original, and synchronized orchestral film score for a sound film, defining the principles of Hollywood film music. Steiner's music, recorded with a 46-member orchestra (a large ensemble for the period), employs classical leitmotif technique to convey the emotional core of the film and clearly characterize its subjects, such as Kong's thunderous but tender three-note theme and the more fragile and romantic theme for the heroine, Ann Darrow ("Stolen Love").
