Os Tartaros - The First Portuguese Surf Garage Band - 1964-1967 - Complete Recordings (2012)

In the early 1960s in Portugal, against the backdrop of rock 'n' roll's decline, the first "British Invasion," led by Cliff Richard and quickly overshadowed by The Shadows, gained momentum. This influence resulted in the formation of numerous Portuguese instrumental rock bands playing guitar-driven melodies, often adapting traditional songs, such as the track TARTÁRIA. The Portuguese press labelled them "Shadows-influenced instrumental bands." It was in this environment that Os Tártaros formed in Oporto (featuring Joaquim Gualter, Alberto Abreu, Hernâni de Melo, and Eduardo Alves) and began touring the country. The musical movement's spread was further boosted by the arrival of The Beatles and the availability of musical instruments on installment, thanks to Gouveia Machado. From 1964 onwards, hundreds of bands emerged across Portugal. Some of their tracks, including material by Os Tártaros, were featured in the compilation PORTUGUESE NUGGETS, which serves as a historical document of a band that played rock during the Portuguese dictatorship when it was considered nearly a crime.
