Paris 1942 - Paris 1942 (2025) [Hi-Res]

An archival 2xLP compiled by Richard Bishop presents a selection of rare recordings by the band Paris 1942, featuring a rare EP, most of the Majora LP, and 11 previously unreleased tracks. Paris 1942 was a short-lived but significant ad-hoc assemblage that emerged from the Phoenix underground before the Bishop brothers formed Sun City Girls with Charlie Gocher. Formed by guitarist Jesse Srogoncik, the band also included Alan Bishop, Richard Bishop, and former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker. Paris 1942 existed between April and August 1982, playing only four shows but rehearsing with discipline. Although they did not release music during their tenure, a self-titled 7" EP and LP later surfaced surreptitiously on the Majora label in the mid-to-late '90s. The group's music is noted for transcending expectations, being more than just a blend of Sun City Girls and The Velvet Underground; Srogoncik's songs share affinities with The Gun Club and Peter Laughner. The Paris 1942 recordings are considered an important missing link in the history of the US underground, providing a fresh perspective on an embryonic and vanishing scene while anticipating future directions.
