Leila Arab's 2000 album, 'Courtesy of Choice,' released on XL Recordings, confirmed her singular, unclassifiable approach to electronic music following her 1998 debut, 'Like Weather.' Initially associated with the Aphex Twin circle, Leila demonstrated a completely original musical language on this album, which resides between traditional songcraft and sound sculpture. The music is characterized by jagged rhythms, warped basslines, clipped percussion, and disembodied vocal fragments (contributed by Donna Paul, Luca Santucci, and Roya Arab) used primarily as textures rather than anchors. The production aesthetic feels both organic and cybernetic, layering funk-tinged grooves with detuned synths and fleeting melodies. Tracks showcase unique genre subversions, ranging from drifting slow-motion pieces ("Different Time") and glitched-out ballads ("To Win Her Love") to soft-rock acoustics-turned-post-rock experimentalism ("To Tell a Lie") and soulful, underwater trip-hop ("Come Around"), consistently avoiding cliché. This 25th-anniversary edition includes an entire bonus LP of material, spanning contextualizing sketches and fully standalone tracks like the "Existential Megamix" and the "Birdie Rave."
