Lenni Torgue - Jeux de mains (2025) [Hi-Res]

Lenni Torgue's quintet's second album, Jeux de mains (2025), continues to explore widespread musical fusion, situated between post-bop, free jazz, and contemporary aesthetics. Following their debut Pray, Dance & Play (2022), the French vibraphonist's compositions have become more mischievous, structured around playful interactions among the members, incorporating elements of gospel and blues. The album features tracks with furious rhythm section drive, such as the Mingus-esque Bout de papier, and dissonant responses from the winds, as in Vas-y Wesh, where vibraphone, clarinet, and flute lines intertwine. The ensemble also explores Afro-claves through collective improvisation in Vents d’Ouest. In addition to lively and enthusiastic tracks, the album reveals itself as a sensitive work, including the ballad Song for my child with classical influences and the tender Peace, reminiscent of Flamenco Sketches. The opening track Morton & Co sets the tone with a fluid, free, and total sound, foreshadowing the syncretism of the entire album, which showcases the rhythmic antics and dialogues of five masterful musicians.
